The Sighting

Last summer I witnessed something I still haven't been able to completely resolve in my mind. I was in the car, driving home from the Y after a brisk workout. I try to go to the Y before work every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I get there when they open at 5 am. You'd be amazed at the number of people who are waiting outside the building when it opens. Anyway, as I said, I was driving home. It was probably just a little after 6. I typically spend about an hour at the Y - forty minutes of vigorous workout plus twenty minutes to shower, dress and get my hair "just right". Anyway,I was driving home. The sky to the east was beginning glow reddish purple, making my surroundings simultaneously eerie and beautiful. I was on Lexington Avenue, just passing Lake Josephine. I remember looking at the lake and the houses around it, all bathed in red.

And then I saw it.

Coming around the corner of the house nearest the road, I saw a man walking with a llama. I noticed them just as I passed by so I didn't get much time to take in the scene. Still, I remember parts of it clearly. The man had his hand near the llama's mouth - I think he was holding onto a bridle or something. The llama appeared quite docile (but then, perhaps they always are) and the two of them acted as if this was something they did routinely.

As I drove on, I thought to myself, "Well, that was kind of weird." In subsequent days I would pay special attention when I passed the house, hoping for another encounter. I have not seen the llama again. I've begun to wonder if perhaps I imagined the whole thing. I wish I would have circled around for another look that morning. If the man had been walking a lion or an elephant I would have circled around. I would have come back for a giraffe. For some reason, a llama just didn't have enough "star power" to merit interrupting my drive. Oh, how I rue that decision!

I've looked at the house and yard a number of times since then. To be honest, I can't see where anyone could keep a llama (well, they do have a boat house that looks mildly suspicious). I thought I was finally over my obsession about this - I pass the house almost every other day, sometimes without even a quick glance. But then last week, as I passed by, I noticed some peculiar footprints in the snowy yard. I doubt they are llama prints, but I can't help wondering.

I know, chances are, I probably just mistook some other animal for a llama. The guy was probably just walking his alpaca.

Must have been interesting seeing a Llama. Perhaps the Llama uses foul language and the man was merely trying to spare others from hearing the horrifying words by keeping his hand near the Llama's mouth. A llama is one thing but a foul mouthed one is quite another.

There's a llama farm in Rochester. It's random, but not as random as what you saw. I believe you really did see a man walking his llama -- it's way too cool not to be true. ;)

I just read that drinking lots of coffee can produce more hallucinations than found in the rest of the population. Could be the answer.

I haven't checked your blog for a few days, so I feel I am coming late to this party, but let me weigh in anyway ... it is CRUCIAL that you solve this mystery! If you indeed did see a llama, then that is truly miraculous! I wonder what it means? If, however, you merely saw a man with an alpaca, well then that is a horse of a different color.

I wonder if all the radio/TV coverage of Obama somehow influenced me. Maybe my subconscious is hard of hearing.
